Taking time out to do your life’s work

A friend of mine is about to depart on a beautiful trip to Europe with her husband and two girls. I think I’ve been just as excited and feel as though I am going too! As I sat down to pen a little note this evening, I felt drawn to this card from my collection of Monet’s – “Hôtel des Roches Noires. Trouville1870” which can be found in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. The history of what was happening at the time really speaks to me through this masterpiece. It was the summer of 1870, on the eve of the Franco-Prussian war and Monet was staying in Trouville with his young wife, Camille, whom he had recently married. Despite Europe being in civic disarray – Monet makes time for love, his family and as the French epitomise in their phrase “joie de vivre” or the joy of life. And from this Monet brings us a masterpiece. So I think of my friend as she departs from the endless list of to-do’s that we all seem to have these days and the beautiful family memories that will be captured, of a couple that could fall in love all over again every day. I think of two young lives sculpted as the girls experience the beauty of an ancient world, life at a slower pace, the vibrancy and passion of French and Italian in their young ears and the imagination of endless possibilities as their minds stretch and grow.

Did Monet know this secret? The great mystery that when we give up trying, when we relax and just enjoi life and rest that our sub-conscious mind can bring forth our best work. You know it’s true, think of when you are trying to remember something and it just won’t come to you, you leave it, completely forget it, then a few moments later, it will come to you as easy as that. I know it but I need to remember it everyday and remind myself to relax, to breathe and to just be.
